THE ADVOCATE FOR FAGDOM
Directed by Angélique Bosio
2011 | France | 91 mins | RATING: R
As a filmmaker Canada’s own Bruce LaBruce has made a career out of shocking mainstream middle-class gay sensibilities with his provocative films that merge indie-punk cinema with an aesthetic of explicit gay pornography. In this full-length documentary by Angélique Bosio, rare archive material, collaborators and famous colleagues peel back the often acerbic layer of the LaBruce canon to reveal a strong sense of the artist behind the art. One part radical, one part punk, and always at war with not just the system, but with all systems, a portrait of the artist emerges that consistently pushes all the boundaries. The film includes interviews with filmmakers John Waters and Gus Van Sant, both of whom could be said to have made films that crossed over to the mainstream, not an option for the continually transgressing LaBruce. This documentary attempts to reconcile the man from his shockingly pastoral childhood on a farm in rural Canada to one of the radical cult icons of gay cinema today. (RM)

Fairy Tales Presentation Society
Fairytales Presentation Society is a not-for-profit, charitable organization located in Calgary, Alberta that focuses on showcasing local and national queer artists. As our name suggests, and bylaws state; we showcase and celebrate queer artists of all artistic mediums including but not limited to film. Our artistic endeavors strive to provide a safe and respectful venue for members of all communities to celebrate queer culture. While the term queer often refers to people who are LGBTTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and questioning), Fairytales understands queer to also include those who subscribe to culturally, politically, artistically, and otherwise alternative and innovative ways of contributing to society. We see queer as a vista, a way of looking at the world differently- with an eye towards diversity, criticality and inclusion.
